Let yourself be whisked away to the world of The Thousand and One Nights with Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous symphonic suite Scheherazade – a classic to kick off the OSM Classical Spree!

Maestro Kent Nagano invites you to join the OSM on a voyage from the Olympic Park’s Esplanade to the heart of legends from faraway lands. Dive headfirst into the stories that have captured imaginations for centuries.

The orchestra will be joined by Cirque Éloize in order to guarantee an evening of unforgettable entertainment!

Architek Percussion is a Montreal-based quartet specializing in the performance of experimental, minimalist, multidisciplinary, crossover, and electroacoustic chamber music. Founded in early 2012, the quartet has quickly established itself as a dynamic force in Canada’s vibrant new music community; equally comfortable performing classical repertoire and exploring new terrain through commissions and premieres. Architek’s current repertoire reflects the cultural and stylistic diversity of North American contemporary music. Members of Architek Percussion are Ben Duinker, Mark Morton, Ben Reimer, and Alessandro Valiante.

Ensemble Saxologie

Ensemble SaxoLogie is a saxophone quartet based in Montreal. The group was founded in 2012 by graduates of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and Université de Montréal music faculty members who together offer a rich, energetic, and expressive approach to the repertoire for saxophone. Ignited by their shared passion for the saxophone, these four musicians aim to impart the legacies of great composers from around the world and inspire a new generation of Quebec composers. In its early days, Ensemble SaxoLogie was already receiving invitations to perform at the Montreal World Film Festival and the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab. While an active player in the Quebec classical music scene, Ensemble SaxoLogie has also taken part in prestigious international events, notably the World Saxophone Congress held in Scotland in 2012 and in France, in 2015.

Discover the unique qualities of these two instrumental cousins, in a demonstration presented by Vincent Lauzer and Benjamin Morency. This illustrated talk will be hosted by Frédéric Lambert.

Blù Bambù

Founded in 2009 by oboists Cynthia Viel and Caroline Plamondon to promote ensemble music for double reed instruments, Ensemble Blù Bambù gave its first concert in early 2010. The ensemble has been a guest in concert series produced by La Maison Villebon in Beloeil and the Atwater Library in Westmount, and has also performed in many corporate events. Over the years, Blù Bambù evolved into a double reed and strings collective to which different artists (musicians, arrangers, as well as a pastry chef and chocolatier) are also invited to participate.

Tango Workshop

Argentinian tango will hold no more secrets for you (or almost none) following these workshops given by Manuel Soto and dancers from the Las Piernas studio. In the course of these demonstrations, learn about the history and the steps of this legendary dance, performed for the occasion by the group ParaTango, consisting of a bandoneon, a violin, a piano, and a double bass.

In addition to its recital performances in Montreal, each year Katcor participates in different festivals and musical events, such as the Journée du cor de Montréal, the Bathurst Chamber Music Festival, and the Jeunesses musicales Canada’s Young Audiences Concerts, to name only these few. Alongside their commitment to the quartet, passionate and versatile musicians Simon Bourget, Xavier Fortin, Alice Lane-Lépine, and Lyne Santamaria also pursue their separate careers, playing regularly with many of the country’s top orchestras.

Montréal hosts one of the greatest cimbalom virtuosos, the instrument also known as the “gypsy piano” that has inspired and accompanied so many people of the diaspora. Alexandru Sura provides a vivid depiction of the cimbalom, so as to help us understand its origin and usage. It’s the sole chance to learn about this rare and difficult to master instrument!
