BECOME A VOLUNTEER

If those challenges interest you, perhaps you’d like to join us? Whether on a regular basis or more occasionally, our 158 volunteer members support the OSM’s educational and musical activities energetically and with dedication. In doing so, they help make the repertoire of orchestral music better known while maintaining the Orchestra’s reputation. All that’s missing is you!

The OSM Volunteer Committee

Who are we?

In April 1948, Pierre Béique, managing director of the OSM from 1939 to 1970, decided to gather together a dozen or so people and create the Women’s Committee – renamed the Volunteer Committee in 1965 so that men who so desired could make their contribution as well. The Committee welcomes volunteers of all ages and with all manner of experience who are eager to support the efforts of the Orchestra.

Since its inception, the Committee has played an essential role in the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, be it through its involvement in periodic fundraising events, in the organization of the OSM Standard Life Competition, in seeing to the preparation of the young spectators for the OSM Youth Concerts, in the reception logistics of certain concerts, in welcoming guest artists, or in working closely on a day-to-day basis with the administrative team.

What do we do?

  The OSM Standard Life Competition

A tradition deeply rooted in the Montreal musical landscape since its creation in 1940, the OSM Standard Life Competition has proved to be an indispensable launch pad for young Canadian artists on the rise, thanks to the combined forces of the administrative staff and the OSM’s Volunteer Committee. For as long as the Competition has existed, Canadian soloists who went on to enjoy renown on the national or international scene have seen their talent showcased there.

Each year, members of the Volunteer Committee join the Orchestra’s administrative staff in organizing the Competition. On its side, the Committee keeps the public informed, solicits financial backing, develops new partnerships, and assumes an important part of the administrative responsibilities for the event.

  OSM Youth Concerts

Founded by Wilfrid Pelletier in 1935, the Youth Concerts have since been enjoyed by thousands of schoolchildren. Volunteer monitors meet elementary school students in their classroom to familiarize them with classical music and to prepare them for the Youth Concert they will be attending.

  OTHER ACTIVITIES

Symphonic Matinees
Before the concert, welcome members of the audience by offering coffee. Truly a pleasant way to start your Wednesdays.

Annual fundraisers
Throughout the musical season, the Volunteer Committee organizes various sales, exhibits, fashion shows, benefit dinners and numerous other events designed to raise funds that are turned directly over to the Youth Concerts program and to endowing a grant for the OSM Standard Life Competition.

Transportation for the artists
When guest soloists arrive in Montreal, our volunteers see that their stay is as pleasant as possible, making initial contact with them at the airport and getting them to rehearsals and concerts.

Administrative work
The Orchestra’s volunteers play a key role in the OSM’s daily operations, whether in establishing a press review of the events surrounding the OSM or in providing assistance to the organization’s different administrative departments.
