Music education has played a crucial role in the life of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, ever since its very first season. It is a bold expression of our belief in the future and therefore the dedication to invest in our next generations. What better way to connect with the very heart of a community than by reaching out to young audiences and helping them discover the beauties of the symphonic repertoire through concert programs designed especially for them?
The Orchestra is now getting ready to move into a brand new hall. The acoustics, we’re sure, will be terrific. But more importantly, we think the hall will let us get much closer to our listeners. We want the next generation to feel more than welcome there. We want them to have a definite influence. And to this end the programming we have developed for them will be one of vivid, flexible forms.
As music is meant to be an art form that is nourished by other arts, we are especially pleased to include young artists from different disciplines in our productions – from ballet to today’s styles – to enhance the musical experience of everyone in the concert hall. L’Arsenal à musique, a group that was awarded the Opus award for outreach outside Quebec in January 2011, will present their re-reading of a perennial favourite, Le Petit Prince, in a spellbinding multimedia show with a musical score by Denis Gougeon. We are also going to offer our young audiences a program that combines the classical repertoire with an introduction to contemporary music by Brian Current. I will also have the pleasure of conducting Peter and the Wolf and The Toybox, early in this coming season’s Children’s Corner. The program will be repeated in the Youth Concerts series by Nathan Brock, assistant conductor of the OSM.
We are really looking forward to seeing you all here. Your enthusiasm for new musical experiences is a true inspiration to us.
