Rafael Payare and the Lyricism of Bruckner
Rafael Payare and the Lyricism of Bruckner
Maison symphonique de Montréal
Bruckner ranks with Brahms as one of the greatest symphonists of the late 19th century. His Symphony no. 7 is a true masterpiece of lyricism enriched by accents of heroism, and has been unanimously acclaimed since its premiere in Leipzig in 1884, also sparking Bruckner’s enduring fame. The work’s atmospheres and use of Wagner tubas – a first – combine in a tribute to the great Richard Wagner. Maestro Payare conducts the OSM in this performance of one of Bruckner’s most celebrated symphonies.
The OSM wishes to dedicate this concert to Antonia Nantel (1886–1955), a founding member of the Société des Concerts Symphoniques de Montréal (which later became the OSM). A pianist and singer by training, she devoted much of her life to the development of musical culture in Quebec. In 1934, she co-founded the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal along with Athanase David and Wilfrid Pelletier. She went on to establish the Montreal Festivals, for which she served as President until 1952. Through her commitment, her determination and her vision, Madame Nantel greatly contributed to positive change in the musical landscape of Montreal, from the 1930s through to the 1950s. > Learn more about
