The OSM presents a dazzling program created by Kent Nagano, featuring a selection of not-to-be-missed concerts. Powerful works and original concerts will be offered throughout the season, including Mahler’s grandiose Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”, and the Schubert Festival, which traces the footsteps of the famous Viennese composer.

OPENING CONCERT: Kent Nagano Conducts Shostakovich's “Babi Yar” Symphony

Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 13 is a deeply moving tribute to the victims of oppression. This powerful work brings together the OSM Chorus and famous Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov, conducted by Kent Nagano. Fire and virtuosity are highlighted as pianist Denis Matsuev joins the OSM in a performance of Rachmaninoff’s magnificent Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Kent Nagano Conducts Bruckner’s “Romantic” Symphony

Kent Nagano conducts Bruckner’s profoundly expressive Symphony No. 4, “Romantic”, one of the composer’s most popular works. Serenade, freely inspired by Plato’s Symposium, is the result of Bernstein’s reflection on the nature of love. This work’s demanding solo part is performed by the OSM’s brilliant Concertmaster Andrew Wan.

Schubert Festival

The OSM devotes a festival to iconic Viennese composer Franz Schubert. Hear this masterful melodist’s emblematic Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. Discover his many facets with Kent Nagano conducting the complete symphonies. The Schubert festival also features works by Mozart, Rossini, and Johann Strauss II. A roster of great artists will transport you to classical Vienna, the cosmopolitan and frivolous city swirling to the music of the waltz.

SPANISH Festival

New discoveries and well-honed classics feature in three concerts devoted to Spain, with renowned conductor Juanjo Mena. Revisit the music of celebrated composers Falla, Sor, and Rodrigo. Discover the works of Guridi and Arriaga. Travel across Spain as Debussy, Ravel, and Bizet dreamt of it. Be transported to the heart of Spanish culture with Arab-Andalusian music and flamenco. The guitar, voice, and piano resonate with the OSM to the distinctive colours of Spanish music.

Closing COncert: Kent Nagano conducts Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony

To close his final season as OSM Music Director, Kent Nagano conducts Mahler’s grandiose Symphony no. 2. The OSM musicians and Chorus, the rich timbre of soprano Camilla Tilling and the warm, velvety voice of mezzo-soprano Mihoko Fujimura join to perform this metaphysical work of grandiose proportions.
