The sublime orchestration and great arches of sound of Elysium by Moussa conjure up the timeless paradise of Greek Antiquity. Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performs Ravel’s Concerto in G, a dazzling, meditative, jazz-tinted work that is both light and brilliant. Then, the atmosphere drastically changes in the concert’s second half with Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, haunted by the spectre of Stalin.

Vikingur Olafsson

Víkingur Ólafsson, piano Víkingur Ólafsson has made a profound impact with his remarkable combination of top-level musicianship and visionary programming. His multi-prize-winning recordings for Deutsche Grammophon—Philip Glass Piano Works (2017), Johann Sebastian Bach (2018), Debussy-Rameau (2020) and Mozart & Contemporaries (2021)—completely won over the public and critics. The Daily Telegraph describes him as “the new superstar of classical piano” and The New York Times, as “Iceland’s Glenn Gould.” Ólafsson is a soloist with the world’s leading orchestras and has served as Artist-in-Residence of many prestigious concert halls and festivals. He also works closely with some of today’s greatest composers. A captivating communicator, he has presented several of his own series for television and radio, hosting live on BBC Radio 4’s flagship arts program, Front Row. During the pandemic, his live broadcasts from an empty Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík reached millions of listeners around the world.
