American pianist and composer Amy Beach wrote her Piano Trio in 1938, in the twilight years of a long and prolific career that began at the age of four. The work shows her various influences, from Romanticism to French modernism, and incorporating folklore. Violist and composer Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio is dated 1921, coinciding with the last moments of tonality and exhibiting great vitality mixed with the drama of wartime that had just come to an end.  These two works, both written in New England, brilliantly explore the possibilities of their three solo instruments.
