Michel Léonard
Music Librarian of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal since 1999, Michel Léonard has dedicated his career to the meticulous and creative management, preparation, and distribution of orchestral materials. Holding a master’s degree in flute performance from the Université de Montréal, where he studied under Francine Voyer, he first distinguished himself as a performer by winning First Prize at the Canadian Music Competition. His passion for music is inseparable from his admiration for J. S. Bach, whose complete works he holds dear—a true source of artistic inspiration and renewal.
A member of the OSM Chorus for over forty years, he has taken part in numerous landmark projects, sharing the stage with renowned conductors and guest soloists. This dual experience—both within the music library and as a chorister—nurtures a unique perspective on the role of music in the life of the orchestra.
Always forward-thinking, Michel has been developing digital tools for several years aimed at transforming the profession of music librarian. Among other initiatives, he designs custom databases in FileMaker, incorporating search, cataloging, and management functions tailored to the complex realities of a modern orchestral library. Known for his curiosity and collaborative spirit, he regularly works with colleagues in Canada and abroad to advance professional practices and explore new avenues for integrating technology into the orchestral world.
