Did you know that a first major gift in culture can entitle you to exceptionally generous tax benefits? In addition to the regular charitable donation tax credit, you may receive an additional tax credit of 25% of the donation amount. Eligibility for the first major gift in culture:
- The donation must be made by an individual (other than a trust) who is a resident of Québec.
- The donation must be a minimum of $5,000 and a maximum of $25,000.
- The donation must be made in cash, including cash, cheques, credit cards, or electronic fund transfers. Donations in kind, such as shares, are not eligible.
- Any unused portion of the tax credit can be carried forward for up to 4 years following the year of the donation, but it cannot be transferred to a spouse.
- The donation may be made in one or several installments during the fiscal year.
- The credit applies to only one donation during the taxpayer’s lifetime.
