Martin Mangrum
Martin Mangrum joined the Orchestra symphonique de Montréal as second bassoon in 2000. Prior to that he held consecutive positions as principal bassoon in the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra (ROSS) and assistant principal in the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC). Martin earned his Doctorate, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Stephen Maxym of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He went on to further studies with Mordechai Rechtman of the Israel Philharmonic. His first bassoon teachers were Thomas Elliot of the Hamilton Philharmonic and Mathew Ruggiero of the Boston Symphony. Generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, he was a recipient of the Sylva Gelber Award in 1985. In addition to his orchestral career, he is also a member of the bassoon faculty at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music
Inspired by music of all genres and eras, he chose a career in music simply because it was the path of least resistance. It was what he found most interesting and what he seemed to be best at. Today, he is also an amateur lutenist!
