Passion Unleashed: Tchaikovsky and Sibelius
Passion Unleashed: Tchaikovsky and Sibelius
Maison symphonique de Montréal
Maestro Rafael Payare and the OSM steer the course through a romantic storm of lyricism and passion. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no. 1 is a technically brilliant work of supercharged vitality with folk dance overtones, featuring Israeli-American pianist Inon Barnatan as soloist. Sibelius completed his Symphony no. 1 in 1899, commandeering an idiom inherited from Romanticism while personally branding it with abrupt changes and magical atmospheres.

Inon Barnatan
“One of the most admired pianists of his generation” (The New York Times), Inon Barnatan is celebrated as a soloist, curator, and collaborator. A regular performer with many prominent orchestras, he served as inaugural Artist-in-Association of the New York Philharmonic.
Inon Barnatan recently performed with the symphony orchestras of Minnesota, Dresden, Barcelona, Stockholm, Ottawa, Innsbruck, Tenerife and Los Angeles, recreated Beethoven’s legendary 1808 concert with the Cincinnati Symphony, and recorded the complete Beethoven piano concertos with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (Pentatone, 2020). During the pandemic, he gave filmed and streamed concerts with orchestras including the Boston, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Detroit, New Jersey, and San Diego symphonies, conducted concertos from the keyboard, and premiered Matthias Pintscher’s Piano Concerto.
This season, he returns to the Chicago Symphony and London Philharmonic, makes debuts with the Liverpool Philharmonic and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and releases the album Time-Traveler Suite (Pentatone, November 2021).
