Richard Strauss: Symphonic Imagination – Matinee

2026-2027

It was shortly after the death of his daughter Blandine in 1862 that Liszt transcribed for organ a work he had previously written for piano: Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen. Deeply moving, the piece unfolds as a series of variations in which the dramatic intensity gradually builds, culminating in a conclusion where sorrow gives way to a consoling hope. With Don Quixote, the tone shifts, and this vast orchestral fresco reveals a gentler, disarmingly tender side of Strauss: under the bow of Alisa Weilerstein, the idealistic knight comes to life with nobility and humanity, conducted by Rafael Payare.

Another version of this concert is also offered, featuring Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel instead of Liszt’s Variations on “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen.”
